Local citations explained
A local citation is any online mention of your business details. Learn why consistency matters, what Google's guidelines require, and where to start.
A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number, with or without a link. Directories, review sites, maps apps, chamber pages and local news can all count.
Local SEO citations matter because they shape how consistently your business appears across the web, to people and to search engines.
What Google says about consistency
Google's guidelines for representing your business ask businesses to represent themselves as they are consistently represented and recognized in the real world, across signage, stationery and other branding. They say your Business Profile name should reflect your real-world name as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery.
The same guidelines require a precise, accurate address or service area. Google says P.O. boxes or mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable, and that virtual offices are not eligible for a Business Profile.
Our read: if your business name, address and phone number differ between your sign, your website, your Business Profile and the big directories, you create doubt for customers and for anyone checking your details.
Why citations help
Google's page on local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, also described as prominence: how well known a business is. Google says prominence is based partly on links to your business and on your reviews. Citations from well-known sites support both being known and being findable.
Where to start with local citations
- Your Google Business Profile. Verify it, and make the name, address, phone and hours exact.
- Your own website. Put the same details in the footer and on the contact page, written the same way.
- The major platforms. Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook and the main maps and navigation apps.
- Your industry directories. The ones customers in your field really use.
- Local organizations. Chamber of commerce, business associations and local news.
How to keep citations consistent
- Choose one format for your name, address and phone, and use it everywhere. Decide "Suite" vs "Ste" once.
- Keep a list of every listing, its login and the date you last checked it.
- Update on change days. When you move, change numbers or rebrand, update the list the same day.
- Watch for duplicates. Two listings for one location confuse people. Merge or remove the extra one through the platform's own process.
What citations cannot do
Our read: citations are a foundation, not a growth engine. A business with perfect citations and no reviews, weak content and no local links will still struggle. Get them right, then spend most of your effort on reviews, useful pages and local reputation.
Quick answers about local citations
Do citations need links? No. A mention of your details counts as a citation with or without a link.
Should I pay for a citation service? It can save time. Make sure you keep access to every listing it creates.
Can I list a virtual office? Google says virtual offices are not eligible for a Business Profile.
The takeaway
Local citations are your business details, repeated accurately wherever customers look. Make them identical, keep a list, and update them the day anything changes.
