Can you advertise on ChatGPT? What small businesses should know

Yes, you can advertise on ChatGPT. How ChatGPT advertising works today, who sees the ads, how bidding and reporting work and what to check before you spend.

Yes, you can advertise on ChatGPT, and since May 2026 you no longer need a big agency budget to try it. ChatGPT advertising started as a test in the United States and has grown quickly, with OpenAI now selling ads directly to small and medium-sized businesses. It is still a new channel, so the details change often. Here is what OpenAI's own pages say today, and how to judge whether it fits your business.

How ChatGPT advertising started

OpenAI's help page on ads in ChatGPT says ad testing started in the United States on February 9, 2026. At first, ads were sold through OpenAI's team and partners.

On May 5, 2026, OpenAI announced new ways to buy ChatGPT ads. Advertisers could now work through partners or use a new self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager, in beta, to set budgets and bids, upload ads, launch campaigns and see performance. The same announcement added cost per click bidding and described new measurement tools, including a Conversions API and pixel-based measurement.

By August 31, 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate and was used by "tens of thousands of advertisers." In that update, it also said the ads were available in over 40 countries and that the May launch of Ads Manager opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses.

Who sees ChatGPT ads, and where

According to OpenAI's help page, ads may appear for people on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, and OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.

Ads appear below the end of a response. They are labeled as sponsored and visually separated from ChatGPT's answer. OpenAI also says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and that ads are not eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics, including personal health, mental health and politics.

For an advertiser, that distinction matters. You are not buying a mention inside the answer. You are buying a labeled spot next to a conversation that is relevant to what you sell.

How bidding and costs work

OpenAI's guide to the basics of ChatGPT ads explains that advertisers set a maximum bid, and that ads are selected through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. For cost per click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click.

Read that number carefully. It is OpenAI's suggested starting ceiling for a bid, not an average price anyone pays and not a minimum budget. No OpenAI page we read lists a minimum spend or an average cost per click, so plan a small test budget of your own and let the results tell you what it costs to win a customer.

How to measure results

The same help page says reporting in the Ads Manager beta includes impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average cost per click, average cost per thousand impressions and conversions. You can also add UTM parameters to your landing page URLs, and OpenAI says those parameters carry through on ad clicks, so your analytics can separate ChatGPT ad traffic from everything else.

Set that up before you launch. If you already track Google Ads and Meta in GA4, add ChatGPT as its own source so you can compare cost per lead across all three. Our guide to how online advertising works covers the basics of reading those numbers.

What you are allowed to advertise

OpenAI's ad policies say ads must be truthful and not misleading, including claims about capabilities, pricing, outcomes, affiliations and comparisons with other products. The policies also say OpenAI may approve ads from approved advertisers in financial services, healthcare and medicine, and legal services, with those categories rolling out gradually and approvals reviewed by hand case by case.

If you run a med spa, a law firm, a clinic or a lending business, read the policy page before you build anything, and expect a review step.

Questions to answer before your first campaign

  • Which conversations come before a purchase? Think about what your ideal customer asks an AI tool in the weeks before they buy from you.
  • Where will the click land? The landing page should answer the question the person was asking. Your homepage usually does not.
  • What do leads cost you today? Know your cost per lead on Google or Meta, so the ChatGPT test has a number to beat.

Is ChatGPT advertising right for your business?

It is worth testing if three things are true.

  1. People already ask AI tools about what you sell. Ads appear below relevant responses, so a business people research before buying has more to gain.
  2. Your tracking works. If you cannot see which channel produced a lead today, a new channel will only add confusion.
  3. You can afford a learning budget. Any new ad platform takes a few weeks of data before you can judge it fairly.

If those are not in place yet, a stronger foundation will do more for you. That usually means a Google Ads account that is set up well and content that helps you show up in AI answers for free, which our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT explains.

Because ChatGPT advertising is new and changing month to month, check OpenAI's help pages before you plan a budget. What is true in October 2026 may look different by spring.
