How to rank in ChatGPT: getting your business mentioned and cited.

There is no ChatGPT ranking you can see or buy. There is access, clarity and reputation, plus a way to check what ChatGPT says about you over time. Here is what OpenAI documents, what you control and a repeatable self-test.

You cannot rank in ChatGPT the way you rank in Google. There is no list of positions to climb and no public ranking to check. What you can do is make your business easy for ChatGPT to find, easy to quote and hard to leave out: let OpenAI's search crawler in, publish clear answers, and earn the mentions other sources repeat. Then check what ChatGPT actually says, on a schedule, and write it down.

That last part is where most businesses go wrong. They ask ChatGPT one question, see a competitor, and decide the whole thing is rigged. One answer is an anecdote. A dated record of the same questions is evidence.

How ChatGPT search finds websites

OpenAI's publishers and developers FAQ is short and worth reading in full. Its first point is the most important: any public website can appear in ChatGPT search. For your content to be included in summaries and snippets, OpenAI says, make sure you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot.

OpenAI documents three separate agents, and they do different jobs:

OpenAI's crawlers and what they do
AgentWhat it doesWhat robots.txt controls
OAI-SearchBotFinds pages to surface in ChatGPT search.Blocking it keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search answers, although they can still appear as navigational links.
GPTBotCollects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models.Blocking it tells OpenAI not to train on your content. OpenAI says each setting is independent.
ChatGPT-UserVisits a page when a person asks ChatGPT to open it.Because a person started the visit, OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply.

Two more details from the FAQ are easy to miss. If a page is disallowed but OpenAI learns its address from a third-party search provider or from other pages, it may still show the link and title in ChatGPT Atlas; OpenAI says to use a noindex tag if you do not want that, and to let its crawler read the page so it can see the tag. And ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so referral visits show up in your analytics.

Check your access first

Before any content work, open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, nothing there should disallow OAI-SearchBot for the pages you care about. A minimal rule that allows it looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

If you also want to opt out of model training, you can disallow GPTBot separately without affecting search. Robots.txt is only one gate: firewalls, bot-protection settings and hosting rules can block crawlers too, so check those if your site seems invisible. The levers you control

OpenAI does not publish a ranking formula, and nobody outside OpenAI can see one. So the honest list of levers is the list of things that make a business easier to find, understand and repeat.

Clear answers on your own pages

Put the answer to the question in the first paragraph, in sentences that still make sense quoted alone. In the research paper that named generative engine optimization, the rewrites that did best on the authors' benchmark added citations, quotations and statistics. That is a lab result, not a promise, but it points the same way as good writing: specific claims with sources.

The same facts everywhere

Your business name, what you sell, where you work and what it costs should say the same thing on your site, your profiles and every directory that lists you. When sources disagree, an assistant has to guess, and guesses are how businesses get described wrongly.

Reviews and mentions on sites people trust

ChatGPT search draws on the public web, so what other credible sites say about you matters. Industry roundups, reviews, partner pages, press and interviews are all places an answer can come from. Earn them rather than buy them; the value of a mention is that someone chose to give it.

Pages that stay current

Prices, services and team pages go stale quietly. Date the pages where timing matters and update them when facts change.

A 20-question self-test

This is an observation method, not a ranking check. Answers can vary with the session, the account and the location, so the goal is a pattern across repeated checks, not a single screenshot.

Four groups of questions for the self-test
GroupFive questions like theseWhat it tells you
Category“Best [what you sell] for [who you serve]” and “who offers [service] in [area]”Whether you are in the running at all.
Comparison“[You] vs [competitor]” and “alternatives to [competitor]”How you are positioned against named rivals.
Problem“How do I [problem your product solves]?”Whether your expertise gets cited when nobody names you.
Brand“What is [your business]?”, “[your business] pricing” and “is [your business] legit?”Whether the facts about you are right.
  • Write the 20 questions once and keep the wording fixed.
  • Run them in ChatGPT with search on, noting whether you were signed in and where you were.
  • Record four things per answer: whether you were mentioned, which of your pages were cited, which other sources appeared and whether any fact about you was wrong.
  • Repeat monthly and compare with the last round before changing anything.

Our guide to tracking your brand in AI search covers how to organize the results over time.

How to read the results

What self-test patterns usually mean
What you seeWhat it usually points to
You never appear, for any questionCheck access first, then whether your site answers these questions at all.
You appear, but with wrong factsYour facts disagree somewhere on the web. Find the source and fix it.
Competitors appear via third-party listsThose lists are part of the answer. Earn a fair place on them.
Your own pages are citedKeep those pages current, and build more like them.

Frequently asked questions

How do you rank in ChatGPT search?

There is no public ChatGPT ranking to climb. Make sure OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages, put clear answers with sources on them, keep your business facts consistent across the web and earn mentions on sites people trust. Then track what ChatGPT says with a fixed set of questions.

How can I see my brand's visibility in ChatGPT?

Ask ChatGPT the same set of buyer questions on a schedule and record whether you are mentioned and which pages are cited. For traffic, ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so referral visits appear in analytics tools such as Google Analytics.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?

No. OpenAI says each crawler setting is independent. OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search, and GPTBot controls whether content may be used for training, so you can allow one and block the other.

How do I track ChatGPT rankings over time?

Track observations rather than rankings: the same questions, asked on a schedule, with the date, platform, conditions, mentions and citations recorded each time. Patterns across several checks are meaningful; a single answer is not.
