What makes Instagram Reels reach more people

How Instagram ranks Reels, from Instagram's own explanation: the predictions it weighs, the signals it uses, and the reels it shows less often.

Instagram has published its own explanation of how it ranks Reels, and it is more useful than most "algorithm hacks." This post walks through what Instagram says and how a business account can use it.

Reels are built for discovery

In Instagram ranking explained, published by Adam Mosseri on May 31, 2023, Instagram says Reels are designed to help people discover new things, with an emphasis on entertainment. It says most of what people see in Reels comes from accounts they do not follow.

That is good news for small accounts: Instagram Reels reach can extend well beyond your followers. And the audience is large: Pew Research Center's social media fact sheet reports that half of U.S. adults say they use Instagram.

The predictions that matter most

Instagram says the most important predictions it makes for Reels are how likely someone is to:

  1. reshare a reel
  2. watch it all the way through
  3. like it
  4. go to the audio page

It also surveys people about whether a reel was worth their time or fun, and learns from that feedback.

Our read: a reel people reshare and finish beats a reel people merely scroll past with a like.

The signals Instagram uses

Instagram lists four groups of signals for how Instagram ranks Reels:

  • Your activity: reels a person has liked, saved, reshared and commented on.
  • History with the poster: whether the person has interacted with the account before.
  • Information about the reel: the audio, the visuals and popularity.
  • Information about the poster: popularity signals such as followers and engagement.

Reels Instagram shows less often

Instagram says it aims to make certain reels less visible, including:

  • low-resolution or watermarked reels
  • reels that are muted or contain borders
  • reels that are mostly text
  • reels already posted on Instagram

So repurposed videos with another app's watermark start at a disadvantage.

How a business can use this

  • Make it worth finishing. Get to the point in the first seconds.
  • Make it worth resharing. A useful tip, a surprising before and after, a relatable moment.
  • Shoot natively. Original, sharp, sound on, no borders or watermarks.
  • Post original content. Repurposed posts are among the reels Instagram shows less often.

Quick answers

Do hashtags drive Reels reach? Instagram's explanation focuses on predicted actions and signals, not hashtags.

Should I reuse TikTok videos? Remove watermarks first. Instagram says watermarked reels are made less visible.

How long should a reel be? Long enough to finish the point. Watching all the way through is one of Instagram's key predictions.

What gets a Reel seen

Instagram ranks Reels on whether people will reshare, finish, like and explore them. Make original, sharp reels worth watching to the end, and your reach grows beyond your followers.
