How to promote your blog so the right people actually read it

How to promote your blog after you hit publish: word of mouth, communities, email, social, internal links and search, with what Google says about promotion.

Publishing a blog post is only half the job. A great article that nobody finds does nothing for your business. Promotion is how you get the first readers, the first links and the first signals that help a post find its audience over time.

Here is how to promote your blog in practical steps, starting with what Google itself says about promotion.

What Google says about promotion

Google's SEO Starter Guide says that effectively promoting new content leads to faster discovery by people interested in the same subject, and by search engines. It lists social media promotion, community engagement, advertising both offline and online, and word of mouth. It also says one of the most effective and lasting ways is word of mouth, where people familiar with your site tell their friends about it, and notes that this usually takes time and investment.

That is the heart of blog promotion: get the post in front of people who care, and make it worth telling someone else about.

Eight ways to promote a blog

1. Email your list. Your subscribers already chose to hear from you. A short note with the main takeaway and a link is often the fastest source of first readers. If you email regularly, follow Google's email sender guidelines, which require one-click unsubscribe for marketing email.

2. Share in communities where your readers gather. Industry forums, professional groups and online communities. Answer the question your post answers, in the thread itself, and link only where the rules allow and the link genuinely helps.

3. Post on social media with a reason to click. Share one insight from the post rather than the headline alone. Different platforms suit different angles, so adapt the message.

4. Link from your own pages. Add links to the new post from related older posts and relevant service pages. Internal links help readers go deeper and help search engines discover new pages.

5. Give it to your sales and support teams. A helpful article is a great follow-up after a call or a support ticket. That is word of mouth with a head start.

6. Reach out to people you mention. If you cite someone's research or feature an example, let them know. Some will share it.

7. Repurpose it. Turn one post into a short video, a carousel or a few social posts that point back to the full article.

8. Use paid promotion selectively. A small ad budget behind your best posts can get them in front of the right audience faster, especially when the post supports a product or service.

Help search engines find it

Make sure each post can be crawled and indexed: it should be linked from your blog index and listed in your sitemap. In Search Console, the URL Inspection tool lets you check how Google sees a page. Search traffic usually grows slowly, so treat it as the long game alongside the faster channels above.

Promote fewer posts, better

Most blogs publish too much and promote too little. One genuinely useful post promoted well will usually outperform five posts nobody hears about. Put your promotion effort behind the posts that best answer what your customers ask.

Your blog promotion checklist

To promote your blog, start with the people closest to you (your list, your team and your communities), make every post worth sharing, link it from your own site and give search time to catch up. Word of mouth is still the most durable blog promotion there is.
