How much video content does a small business need?
How much video content does a small business need? Less than you think. A realistic weekly rhythm, where to post it, and what Pew's survey says about platforms.
How much video content does a small business actually need? Our read: less than you fear, but more consistently than most businesses manage now.
Where your audience already watches
Pew Research Center's social media fact sheet, based on a survey of 5,022 U.S. adults from February 5 to June 18, 2025, found that YouTube and Facebook are the most widely used social media platforms in the United States. Half of U.S. adults say they use Instagram, and smaller shares use TikTok, Reddit, Snapchat and X.
Our read: for most small businesses, video on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram covers the largest share of customers. Add other platforms only where your specific customers gather.
A realistic rhythm
Our read, for video content for a small business without a video team:
- One useful short video a week. Answer a question customers ask, show a job in progress, or show a before and after.
- One longer video a month. A walkthrough, a process explainer, or an honest answer to "how much does it cost."
- Reuse everything. Cut the long video into short clips, and embed it on the matching page of your website. Google's video SEO guide says a video must be embedded on a watch page to show in video results, and that the watch page has to be indexed and performing well in Search.
That is about five videos a month. Consistency beats volume.
What to film first
- The ten questions customers ask on the phone.
- Your process, from first call to finished job.
- A real project, start to finish.
- Common mistakes you fix.
- A short welcome from the owner, for your website and Business Profile.
Phone or professional?
Start on a phone. Our read: for short videos, the hook and the usefulness matter more than the camera. Pay for professional filming once you know which formats your audience responds to.
Keep it honest
If you use AI-generated or altered footage of real people or places, check each platform's disclosure rules before posting.
Quick answers
Do I need to post daily? No. Weekly and steady beats daily and abandoned.
How long should short videos be? Long enough to deliver one point. Cut everything else.
Should I use YouTube for a local business? Pew found YouTube is among the most widely used platforms, and videos can also live on your website and Business Profile.
The takeaway
How much video content does a small business need? About one useful short video a week and one longer one a month, posted where your customers already watch, each ending with a clear next step.
