Demand Gen campaigns in Google Ads: Discover placements, YouTube and more

What Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns are, where the ads appear (YouTube, Discover, Gmail and more), and when they make sense for a business.

Search ads catch people who are already looking for you. But most of your future customers are not searching yet. They are watching videos, scrolling recommendations and reading email. Demand Gen campaigns in Google Ads are built to reach them there.

Below is what Demand Gen campaigns are, where the ads show up, including Discover placements, and how to decide whether they belong in your plan.

What Demand Gen campaigns are

Google's help page on Demand Gen describes them as campaigns that capture engagement and action across YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Google Display Network. Google says they can help advertisers reach up to 3 billion monthly active users across those surfaces.

The emphasis is on visual, scroll-stopping creative: images, video and formats designed to feel at home in a feed. Google describes the format as audience-first creatives that create new demand and drive conversions.

Where Demand Gen ads appear

  • YouTube, including Shorts and in-feed placements
  • Discover, the personalized feed of articles and videos many people see in the Google app
  • Gmail
  • Maps
  • The Google Display Network

That last one matters more than it used to. Google says Display campaigns are moving to Demand Gen. Starting June 2026, eligible advertisers can voluntarily move existing campaigns with a migration tool, and Google says that later, new campaigns of this kind can only be created within Demand Gen.

Reaching new people with lookalike segments

One of the most useful features is lookalike segments. Google says a lookalike segment starts from people who made a past purchase, visited your website or watched videos on your YouTube channel, and helps you reach new, qualified audiences outside your existing customers.

For a business with a solid customer list or steady site traffic, that is a practical way to find more people like your best customers.

When Demand Gen makes sense

Demand Gen tends to fit when:

  • Your product is visual. Fashion, home goods, food, travel and anything that photographs well.
  • People do not search for your solution yet. A new product or category has little search demand to capture.
  • You have creative to work with. Good images and short videos are the fuel. Without them, results usually suffer.
  • You have audience data. Customer lists and site visitors make lookalike segments far more useful.

It tends to be a weaker fit when the budget is very small and you have not yet captured the search demand that already exists. Search ads reach people with intent. Demand Gen creates interest. Most businesses should be strong at the first before investing heavily in the second.

How to judge results fairly

People who see a Demand Gen ad are earlier in their decision than someone searching for you by name. Expect fewer immediate conversions than search, and look at assisted results and branded search over time as well as last-click sales. Give tests enough time and budget to learn before deciding.

Is Demand Gen right for you?

Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns put visual ads in front of people on YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network, and they are becoming Google's home for display advertising. They work best with strong creative, real audience data and realistic expectations about how quickly interest turns into sales.
