The benefits of local SEO

The benefits of local SEO, explained with Google's own guidance: showing up when nearby customers search, earning trust through reviews, and lower costs over time.

Jessica Wells·4 min read

Local SEO is the work of showing up when people near you search for what you sell. The benefits of local SEO get easier to see once you know how Google builds local search results.

How Google decides who shows up locally

Google's help page on local ranking says local results are mainly based on three things:

  • Relevance: how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.
  • Distance: how far each business is from the person searching. If they do not share their location, Google uses what it knows about it.
  • Popularity, or prominence: how well known a business is, based partly on links to the business and on reviews.

Google adds that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That is the first benefit: the top local spots are earned, not bought.

Benefit 1: you appear when buyers are close and ready

Google's How Search works guide uses the example of a search for "bicycle repair shops," which shows different results in Paris than in Hong Kong and will likely show local results. Local searches like that come from people who need a business nearby. Showing up there puts you in front of buyers at the right moment.

Benefit 2: your Google Business Profile does much of the work

Google's local ranking tips focus on things any business can do:

  • verify the business
  • keep information complete and accurate
  • keep hours, including special hours, current
  • respond to reviews
  • add photos and videos

Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results.

Benefit 3: reviews build ranking and trust together

Google says more reviews and positive ratings may improve your local ranking, and that replying to reviews shows you value feedback. Our read: reviews are the rare marketing asset that helps ranking and persuades the next customer at the same time.

Benefit 4: lower costs over time

Our read: ads stop the moment the budget stops. A strong Business Profile, consistent citations, local links and useful pages keep working after the work is done. Many businesses use both, with ads covering gaps while organic visibility grows.

Benefit 5: better data about your customers

Your Business Profile and Search Console show what local customers search for, which helps you decide which services to promote and which pages to write.

Who benefits most from local SEO

  • Businesses with a storefront or office customers visit.
  • Service-area businesses, such as plumbers or cleaners. Google allows a service-area Business Profile for businesses that travel to customers.
  • Multi-location businesses that need each location found.

Quick answers about local SEO

How long does local SEO take? Profile fixes can show quickly; reviews and links build over months.

Do I need a website for local SEO? A Business Profile can rank without one, but a website gives Google and customers more to go on.

Can I rank in a city where I have no address? Distance is one of Google's three factors, so ranking far from your location is hard. Service-area businesses can list the areas they serve.

Why local SEO pays off

Local SEO puts you in front of nearby customers when they are ready to buy, and most of it runs through a Business Profile you control. Keep it complete, earn reviews, and build your local reputation.
