Agentic AI in ad management: what is real today

Agentic ads management sounds like the future. See what Google Ads already automates today, what it still leaves to you, and how to stay in control.

"Is agentic ads management a thing?" is a fair question for any advertiser right now. The honest answer: a lot of AI in ad management is already real, it just does not look like a robot running your account. It looks like settings you can switch on.

What "agentic" means here

Our working definition: software that takes actions in your account toward a goal, instead of only suggesting them. By that definition, Google Ads already offers several agent-like features.

1. Smart Bidding and Performance Max

Google's page on Performance Max describes a campaign where you set conversion goals and an optional ROAS or CPA target, and Google's AI serves ads across all Google Ads inventory, bidding in real-time auctions based on the predicted chance of a conversion.

2. AI Max for Search

Google's page on AI Max for Search campaigns describes a set of features that includes search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. Google states that advertisers who activate AI Max typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, citing its own internal 2025 data for non-retail advertisers. That is Google's figure about its own product, so test it in your account rather than assume it.

3. Automatically applied recommendations

Google lets you automatically apply recommendations. When you turn it on, chosen recommendations apply regularly without you clicking each one. Google says only a select number of recommendation types can be auto-applied, that auto-apply will not raise your budget, and that you can review applied changes in the History tab and the Change History page.

4. Ads in AI Overviews

Google's page on ads and AI Overviews says text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can show within AI Overviews, matched on both the query and the AI Overview's content. It lists the countries where this is available, including the US, and notes that sensitive categories such as healthcare and finance are excluded for now.

What is still your job

Our read: AI handles bids, placements and variations well. It cannot decide what a lead is worth to your business, whether your offer is any good, or whether the landing page tells the truth. Those inputs decide what the automation chases.

  • Feed it accurate conversion goals. Count real leads and sales, with values if you can.
  • Set guardrails. Brand exclusions, negative keywords, budgets and URL rules.
  • Review the changes. Check History and Change History monthly.

Quick answers

Will AI replace PPC managers? Our read: it replaces repetitive tasks. Strategy, offers and measurement still need people.

Can I turn auto-apply off? Google says it can be turned on or off at any time.

Is AI Max the same as Performance Max? No. AI Max adds features to Search campaigns; Performance Max is its own campaign type across Google's inventory.

The takeaway

Agentic ads management is already here in pieces: Smart Bidding, Performance Max, AI Max and auto-applied recommendations. Use them on purpose, with clean goals and clear guardrails, and keep reviewing what they change.
