ChatGPT answers just got buttons, charts and calculators
OpenAI is rolling GPT-6 out to every ChatGPT user, free tier included, with answers that can now carry charts, forms and working calculators. Its answers to search questions start arriving 44% sooner on average. Pew found people click a result in 8% of searches that show an AI summary, versus 15% without one.
ChatGPT used to answer you like a very fast pen pal. As of this week it can answer like a very fast pen pal who also brought a whiteboard, a calculator and a little interactive diagram of your bike.
What OpenAI shipped
OpenAI started rolling GPT-6 into ChatGPT on Wednesday, October 7, with a feature it calls Intelligent UI. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users got it first, on a version called GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users get a lighter version, GPT-6 Luna, starting Thursday, Search Engine Journal reported.
Intelligent UI means the model decides how each answer is laid out. A plain question can still get plain text. Other questions now get charts, forms, tappable buttons or a small working tool built on the spot, like a savings calculator or a bill splitter for dinner with friends. In one of OpenAI's demos, ChatGPT drew a seven speed bicycle with buttons that light up each part, Quartz reported, citing The Verge.
Speed got an upgrade too. For questions that need a web search, GPT-6 Instant starts answering about 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, and OpenAI says it is better at deciding when to look something up and at finding information that supports its answer.
Why this lands on every website
The audience is huge. Similarweb estimates ChatGPT drew about 5.9 billion web visits worldwide in September, its best month since October 2025, Forbes reported on October 5. Gemini drew about 2.6 billion and Claude about 996 million. In the US, 49% of adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024, according to the Pew Research Center.
Free users are the part that matters most. When the free tier gets the visual version, the person comparing contractors, clinics or software on a lunch break gets it too. That's your customer, not a power user in a lab.
Search Engine Journal pointed out the obvious casualty: if ChatGPT can build a mortgage calculator or a unit converter inside the chat, the web pages that exist only to host those tools have a new competitor. Nobody needs to click through to a calculator that just appeared in the answer.
What the click data already tells us
We have a preview of how this goes. When Pew studied the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, people clicked a regular search result in just 8% of Google searches that showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. Links inside the summary itself got clicked on 1% of visits, and 26% of summary pages ended the browsing session outright, Pew Research Center found.
That study was about text summaries. A summary that also hands you a chart and a working tool gives people even less reason to leave. Our read: fewer clicks for easy questions, and the clicks that remain come from people who are further along and want something specific.
Where the visit still happens
The good news is in the fine print of that upgrade: OpenAI says GPT-6 is better at knowing when to look something up, and at finding information that backs up its answer. A visual answer about which local roofer to call, or what a service typically includes, still has to be built from somewhere. It gets built from sites the model can read and trust.
That's what answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) are about. It's regular SEO with one extra question: can an AI tool get into your site, understand who you are and quote you correctly? That comes down to crawler access, fast pages, clear headings, business schema and plain answers to the questions your customers actually ask.
Where this leaves you
ChatGPT is turning answers into small apps, and it is handing them to free users at the same time. The data says simple questions will send fewer visitors. The businesses that keep winning will be the ones AI tools can read clearly, and the ones with something worth visiting once the easy answer is already on the screen.
