How to use this directory
One thing to know before you start: fame is a poor filter. The best-known name is often the wrong first call, because stage decides most of the fit. A seed fund and a growth fund can share a street and have nothing to offer the same company.
- Filter by stage first. It is the fastest way to set aside firms that cannot invest in you at all. 70 firms here carry a pre-seed or seed label, based on their own descriptions.
- Then by sector, but read the firm's own words. Our sector labels are shorthand. Each profile also shows the focus in the firm's own wording, which is what counts.
- Check the portfolio for conflicts. A firm that has backed a direct competitor may pass for that reason alone.
- Read how the firm wants to hear from founders. Some run programs anyone can apply to, such as Y Combinator. Many prefer an introduction. The firm's own site is the only reliable source.
- Keep dates with your notes. Firms change focus, partners move and funds close. Write down when you checked each detail.
Why the Bay Area still matters for venture capital
Money follows companies, and the companies are still concentrated here. In 2025, companies based in California drew $191.2 billion of the $320.0 billion invested in US venture-backed companies, or 59.76%, according to the PitchBook data in the NVCA 2026 Yearbook. They were 31.52% of the 14,757 companies funded.
The same yearbook counts 2,984 venture capital firms in existence in the US in 2025, meaning firms that raised a fund in the last eight vintage years. Most are small, and many publish little about themselves. This directory covers the 149 Bay Area firms with enough public evidence for an accurate profile: 147 headquartered in the Bay Area, plus Index Ventures and Canaan, which are headquartered elsewhere but run major Bay Area offices.
Of those firms, 89 list an office in San Francisco, 34 in Palo Alto and 33 in Menlo Park, home of Sand Hill Road. Many list more than one. The rest are spread from Berkeley and Oakland to San Mateo, Mountain View and Santa Clara.
How we built this directory
We group firms by their stated investment focus and the research classifications in this directory. A category match is a reason to investigate, not evidence that a firm will invest. Current terms and contact instructions belong on the firm's own website.
Each record lists the pages we checked for it and when. Our stage and sector labels are research shorthand; every profile shows the firm's own words beside them.
Corrections, and what is not here
Firms change. If a detail is out of date, use Suggest a correction on the firm's row and include your source. We left out firms whose public information was too thin to profile accurately. We also do not list check sizes, fund sizes or contact details; the firm's own site is the source for those.
Investor research and marketing are separate jobs, and this directory is only about the first. If marketing is on your list too, our pages on marketing for technology companies, our San Francisco marketing agency and SEO in Palo Alto explain how we work.
Frequently asked questions
How many venture capital firms are in San Francisco and the Bay Area?
There is no official count by region. This directory profiles 149 Bay Area firms with enough public evidence to describe accurately. Nationally, the NVCA 2026 Yearbook counts 2,984 US venture capital firms in existence in 2025, most of them small.
Where are most venture capital firms in the Bay Area located?
In this directory, 89 of 149 firms list an office in San Francisco, 34 in Palo Alto and 33 in Menlo Park, home of Sand Hill Road. Many firms list more than one office.
Which Bay Area venture capital firms invest at pre-seed or seed?
In this directory, 70 firms carry a pre-seed or seed label, based on their own descriptions. Filter by investment stage to see them, then confirm on each firm's site that it still invests at that stage.
How do you approach a venture capital firm in San Francisco?
Start with the firm's own website, which is the source for how it wants to hear from founders. Some firms run programs anyone can apply to, such as Y Combinator; many prefer an introduction from someone they know. Match the firm's stage and focus before you reach out.
Is this a list of investors who will fund my startup?
No. Inclusion means a firm has enough public information to profile, not that it is investing now or would invest in you. A category match is a reason to research a firm further, not a prediction.
