Is YC Startup School worth it? Plus what AI Startup School is.

According to startupschool.org, checked September 13, 2026, signing up gets you:

• Lessons from YC partners and industry leaders, including one on how and when to apply to Y Combinator, taught by Dalton Caldwell, YC's head of admissions.
• A self-paced format. YC estimates about seven weeks if you spend one to two hours a week.
• Co-founder matching, which YC calls the world's largest co-founder matching platform, with over 100,000 matches made. Your profile is approved first, which the FAQ says may take up to a week, and you can send 15 invites a week.
• A weekly update tool to track your progress and stay accountable.

It costs nothing. The FAQ says all you need is a device with internet access. The format has also changed over the years: YC says Startup School has been a one-day conference, a class at Stanford, a live online course and a self-paced program, and today it is continuous access to the resources YC considers most useful to early founders.

AI Startup School was an event, not a course. YC held its first AI Startup School in San Francisco on June 16 and 17, 2025, for undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in computer science, machine learning, applied math and related fields. YC described it as a 100% free event with every attendee hand-picked, and it covered up to $500 in airfare for people flying in.

In 2026, YC's in-person event ran under the Startup School name. Startup School 2026 took place on July 25 and 26 in San Francisco, again for hand-selected technical builders, with talks, small-group sessions with YC partners, demos and a limited number of $500 flight credits. It has ended, and YC says to follow its LinkedIn and X (Twitter) accounts for news of future events.

For most people at the start, yes, because the only cost is your time. It is most useful if you:

• Have an idea, or are building before launch, and want YC's advice in one place.
• Need a co-founder. The matching platform alone can justify signing up.
• Want a weekly habit of measuring progress, which the update tool is built for.
• Are thinking about applying to YC and want to hear from its head of admissions first.

It is a weaker use of your time if you:

• Have launched and have customers. The FAQ says that if you have launched, have customers and are working on your startup, the YC batch program is probably a better fit.
• Expect it to lead to funding. The course does not invest, and finishing it earns no place in a batch.

One number gets quoted a lot. Startup School's FAQ says that in “the most recent YC batch,” 45% of the companies were former Startup School participants, without saying which batch. That shows overlap, not a way in: founders who plan to apply to YC are exactly the people likely to take YC's free course, and the same FAQ says taking part does not automatically improve your chances.

The course includes a lesson on how and when to apply, and the 2026 event offered small-group sessions where attendees could ask YC partners about applying. Neither is an application. To join the accelerator, you apply and interview, and if YC accepts the company, it invests on its standard deal: $500,000, made up of $125,000 for 7% on a post-money SAFE plus $375,000 on an uncapped SAFE with a most-favored-nation provision, as published on September 13, 2026.

• Pick one number and report it every week in the update tool, even when it is small.
• Watch the application lesson early, so you know what YC asks before you build the story around it.
• Treat a co-founder match as a trial. The FAQ recommends starting with two to four weeks of close work and putting what you agree in writing.
• Talk to customers alongside the lessons. The advice is only as good as the evidence you bring back to it.
