What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? A practical guide for businesses.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business easy for answer engines to find, understand and quote. Here is how answers get assembled on each platform, what Google actually requires, and the changes to your site that matter.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business easy for answer engines to find, understand and quote. Answer engines are the tools that reply with an answer instead of a list of links: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, voice assistants and the featured snippet at the top of a results page.
It is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO aimed at the answer rather than the ranking, with a few extra habits around how pages are written and how consistently your business is described across the web. And if you have seen the acronym elsewhere, you are not imagining things: AEO is also American Eagle Outfitters' stock ticker, which is why it is spelled out in full here.
Answer engine optimization, GEO and the other names
You will see the same idea under several names. Wikipedia lists answer engine optimization as another term for generative engine optimization (GEO), alongside AI SEO and a few others, and its “Answer engine optimization” entry redirects to the generative engine optimization article. In practice, people use AEO for being the answer anywhere an engine replies directly: an AI summary, a featured snippet or a voice assistant.
For a business, the label matters less than the question underneath it: when someone asks about what you sell, does the answer include you, and is it right?
How answer engines assemble an answer
The broad pattern is similar everywhere: the engine finds candidate pages, picks the ones it will draw on, writes an answer and links some of its sources. The details are not. Each platform documents access in its own way, and none publishes exactly how it chooses which sources to cite.
| Answer engine | How pages get in, per its own documentation |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional requirements. |
| ChatGPT search | OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT search; OpenAI says sites that block it will not appear in search answers, though they can still show as navigational links. |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results. Perplexity recommends allowing it in robots.txt, and says it is not used to train AI foundation models. |
| Featured snippets and voice answers | Drawn from Google's index, so the same indexing and snippet eligibility apply. |
The practical takeaway: access is documented and checkable, selection is not. So make sure each engine you care about can reach your pages, then make those pages the clearest, best-supported answer available.
What Google requires for answer engine optimization
For Google, the answer is refreshingly short. Its page on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. You do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup. The usual SEO fundamentals, such as crawlable pages, internal links, text content and structured data that matches the visible page, are what Google points to.

What to change on your site
Headings that match the question
Write headings the way buyers ask: “How much does it cost to…” rather than “Pricing overview.” One question per section keeps each answer easy to lift out.
A direct answer, then the detail
Put the answer in the first sentence or two under the heading, in words that still make sense on their own. Then support it: the numbers, the conditions, the exceptions. Answer engines, voice assistants and skimming readers all reward the same structure. Our guide to voice search SEO covers the spoken version of this.
Structured data that matches the page
Schema markup helps machines read what a page is about, but Google says no special AI schema is needed and that structured data should match the visible text. Mark up what is on the page; do not mark up what is not.
The same facts about you everywhere
Your business name, what you sell, who you serve, where you work and your prices should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. When sources disagree, an answer engine has to choose, and it may choose wrong.
Mentions on sites people trust
Answer engines draw on the wider web, not only your site. Reviews, industry lists, partner pages, interviews and press all shape what gets said about you. Earn them; do not buy them.
Access for the engines you care about
- Check robots.txt for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, depending on where you want to appear.
- Check your firewall and bot protection too. Perplexity notes that sites using a web application firewall may need to allow its crawler explicitly.
- Keep training and search settings separate where platforms allow it. OpenAI and Perplexity both describe their search crawlers as independent of model training.

How to measure answer engine optimization
Measurement is partly available and partly manual. Google includes AI features traffic in the Search Console Performance report, in the Web search type, with no separate AI report. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so those visits show up in analytics, according to its publishers and developers FAQ.
The rest is observation: a fixed set of buyer questions, checked on each platform on a schedule, with the date, the answer, whether you were mentioned, which pages were cited and whether the facts about you were right. Patterns across several checks are meaningful. A single answer is not.
AEO and SEO: what actually differs
| Traditional SEO | Answer engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank a page and earn the click | Be the source an answer uses, cites or names |
| The foundation | Crawling, indexing, helpful content | The same, plus access for each answer engine you care about |
| How pages are written | Complete coverage of a topic | The same, with direct answers that can be quoted on their own |
| Off-site signals | Links and reputation | Consistent facts and mentions across the web |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Search Console and referrals, plus dated observation of answers |
Most of the work overlaps, which is good news: done well, the same page serves both. Our AI search optimization page explains how we approach the part that does not.
Frequently asked questions
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a business easy for answer engines, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and voice assistants, to find, understand and quote. It builds on SEO, with extra attention to direct answers, consistent facts and mentions across the web.
How does answer engine optimization work?
Answer engines find candidate pages, choose which to draw on, write an answer and link some sources. AEO makes sure each engine can reach your pages, then makes those pages the clearest and best-supported answer, with facts about your business that match everywhere they appear.
How does AEO differ from traditional SEO?
SEO aims to rank a page and earn the click; answer engine optimization aims to be the source an answer uses or cites. The foundations are the same. AEO adds direct, quotable answers, access for each answer engine, consistent facts across the web and dated observation of what the engines say.
What does AEO stand for in digital marketing?
In digital marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The same letters are also American Eagle Outfitters' stock ticker, which is why many AEO searches are about the retailer.
Do I need special schema or files for AEO?
Not for Google. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Other platforms document their own crawlers, so check that the ones you care about can reach your pages.
