Sand Hill Road: the street, its history, and the firms there today.

The road connects El Camino Real at its east end with Portola Road in Woodside at its west end, crossing Interstate 280 on the way, according to Wikipedia's article on the road. Stanford University, the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford Shopping Center are all near it or on it. Every venture office address we checked is in the Menlo Park stretch, and the name is often used to mean the venture industry itself.

In 1972, the firm now known as Kleiner Perkins became the first venture capital firm to open an office on Sand Hill Road, and others followed until the road held what Wikipedia calls the most important cluster of venture capital firms in the world. Kleiner Perkins later moved operations to downtown San Francisco, then moved most of them back to Sand Hill Road.

The address has long carried a price. Figures cited in the Wikipedia article put office rents at about $144 a square foot a year in mid-2000, above Manhattan and London's West End at the time, $111 a year in December 2014, against $102 on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, and $10.66 a square foot a month in June 2022.

3000 Sand Hill Road is an office complex that holds one of the road's largest concentrations of firms. Wikipedia names Sequoia Capital and Redpoint Ventures among the firms housed there. Tenants change, so check a firm's own site for its current address before you visit.
