Gemini now checks your customers' saved Google Maps places

Gemini can now use a person's own Google Maps searches and saved places, with their permission. Google's example has it pick a spot from a saved restaurant list near the day's last meeting. The same feature reached Android Auto two days earlier.

Everyone has a Google Maps list of places they swear they'll try someday. Gemini can now look at that list when it helps them decide where to go. The humble "Want to go" list just got a promotion, and every local business on one should notice.

What Google turned on

On October 22, Google said Gemini can now draw on a person's Google Maps "searches and saved places" alongside their calendar, as 9to5Google reported that day. The feature is called Personal Intelligence. It could already connect to Google's Search services, which include Maps. This expansion lets it use the specific places someone looked up and the ones they saved.

Google's example is refreshingly ordinary. Someone has a list of restaurants they keep meaning to try and asks for the best spot after their meetings. Gemini checks where the last meeting is on their calendar, then looks for saved places nearby. No ad, no search results page, just a recommendation pulled from a list the person built months ago.

It only works for people who switch it on. Personal Intelligence lives in Gemini's personalization settings, and Google says apps aren't connected until you choose to turn it on. You can turn it off again whenever you like.

It rides along in the car too

Two days earlier, on October 20, Google brought Personal Intelligence to Android Auto. In its announcement, Google says that with permission it connects Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search, and one of its own examples is pulling up "a place you saved in Google Maps." Another sample request asks for an indoor restaurant along the route that suits the driver's usual taste.

Availability is wide. Google says it covers eligible personal accounts for people 18 and older, everywhere except the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Workspace business accounts are left out, and cars with Google built in get it in the coming months.

Why a saved place matters more now

A Google Maps list used to be a bookmark. Maps comes with default lists such as Favorites and Want to go, and saving a place takes a few taps that end on Save, according to Google Maps Help. For most people, those lists sat untouched until they happened to remember them. Now an assistant can open the list for them at the exact moment they are choosing.

That shifts the job for a local business. Showing up in local search still matters, and Google says local results come down to relevance, distance and prominence. But for a customer who already saved you, the question an assistant answers is closer to "which of these places fits right now?" Getting on the list is half the work. Being the right fit when Gemini reads it is the other half.

Marketing insight: Ask happy customers to save you on Google Maps the way you would ask for a review: at the counter, on the receipt, in the follow up email. For anyone who turns on Personal Intelligence, a saved place is now a place Gemini can recommend back to them.

What to check on your Business Profile

When an assistant picks from a saved list, your listing has to show that you fit the moment. Google's own advice for local results starts with complete and accurate information: your address, categories, attributes like parking or Wi-Fi, a verified profile and current hours, including special hours, per Google Business Profile Help. An assistant planning someone's evening is the worst possible audience for last year's hours.

Photos and review replies sit on the same list of Google tips. They're also what people look at when Gemini hands them your name and they tap through before heading out.

This builds on the ads test we covered on October 18, where Google started testing ads in AI Mode for people with Personal Intelligence turned on. Personal data is becoming the place where AI answers and ads meet, and businesses with clean, complete listings start ahead in both.

The bigger shift

For years, local marketing meant winning the search. More of it now means winning the shortlist: the places a customer saved, looked up and meant to try, long before they needed them. Then it means being the right answer when an assistant reads that shortlist back. It's a slower game, and it favors the businesses people liked enough to save.
